Animal rights groups in Canada and Europe had harsh words for Gov.-Gen. Michaëlle Jean after she sliced off and ate a raw piece of a seal's heart while visiting Rankin Inlet on Tuesday, Canwest News reported. Ms. Jean is currently touring the Canadian Arctic and many northeners praised her public support for the hunt and traditional Inuit culture. But animal rights groups accuse Ms. Jean of using the Inuit to fight the European Union's ban, voted on and passed earlier this month, blurring the traditional and commercial hunts for political gain. The EU ban on commercial seal products will take effect in early summer 2010.
