Volte-Face on Czech Visas

After large numbers of Roma successfully claimed refugee status in Canada, the government has decided to re-impose visa requirements on citizens of the Czech Republic, the Globe and Mail reported.Immigration Minister Jason Kenney indicated the change would be made to Czech media last week. Since the fall of 2007, Czech nationals were permitted to visit Canada without a visa. Roma face discrimination in Europe and 2,000 have been accepted to Canada as refugees. Mr. Kenney said the Czech Republic is "hardly an island of persecution in Europe."
